PROGRAM NOTES EXCERPT:
De Motu Cordis is a work for mixed ensemble named after seventeenth century medical scientist William Harvey's seminal work "Exercitatio anatomica de motu cordis et sanguinis in animalibus (Concerning the motion of the heart and blood)".
The ensemble functions as a reflection of the physiological process of blood flow, with different instrument groups possessing different timbral and gestural qualities in their sonic content. As a whole, though, the three groups of instruments function in a connective flow, circulating sonic content in a way which can only work as a cohesive collective.
Culminating in a rush of energy, the music content at all points mirrors the familiar physiological reactions we humans experience upon experiencing excitement and intrigue. On the other hand, the musical content of each instrument's parts alone sound quite elusive and abstract, reiterating the often surprising unfamiliarity humans have towards their own physiological functions.
